First Day of Medical Camp     2 November, 2023, 04:07 pm
Today, we had our first day of Medical Camp. We got off to a much later start than anticipated, because we had to wait for the medical staff from the county health center to arrive. Everything was set up for us, and there were lots of people patiently waiting under one of the tents for us.

The cultural home of the Kumam people was so interesting. It actually consisted of several small, brick huts- one for the main house (where the parents slept), the place the kids slept, guest house, kitchen, bathing house, and outhouse. We were graciously welcomed by the people there, with the women and girls kneeling as they took our hands, in the traditional Kumam way of welcoming and showing respect.

At about 11:30, it started raining. We had to fit all of the clinic stations- registration, triage, consultation, glasses, malaria testing, and pharmacy under one tent. The rain let up only to return with a vengeance-driving rain and very strong wind. Not one of our partners even suggested stopping the clinic, and the clinic continued. Viewing what most would have considered an interruption in the clinic, a Ugandan nurse said, "It is a blessing." They have had periods of drought and really needed the rain.

By 6:00 PM, we had seen about 170 people and distributed approximately 70 pairs of reading glasses. Thank you all for your prayers over this project and for your support. God used it all for His purpose.

Today was a great day that had several challenges, very warm welcomes, learning experiences, and incredible teamwork. I look forward to tomorrow's clinic among the Iteso people.

Final Preparations     1 November, 2023, 04:58 pm
Today was spent packing multivitamins, sorting and packing meds, and more importantly, getting to know the team we will be working with. Our day ended with a tour of Soroti. There is a great team here that is excited about serving the Kumam and Iteso people. The team consists of 8 nurses who will be working in registration, triage, malaria and possibly HIV testing and pharmacy, 1-2 clinicians, Emily in reading glasses, pastors, teachers, and many others. There will also be open-air preaching at the clinic, where the people can hear about the Lord who loves them.

We are as ready as we can be for tomorrow’s first clinic. We covet your prayers that things would go smoothly, and that at each station of the clinic, the Lord would be honored and the people would sense His love for them.

Yes, We Are Finally There!     31 October, 2023, 03:12 pm
Well, it sure has been a journey, but we have finally arrived in Soroti, Uganda. I (Stephanie) left my house at 8:30 AM (Maine time) on Saturday, October 28, and arrived in Soroti at 7:30 PM (Maine time) on Tuesday, October 31!

We had a short flight from Nairobi to Entebbe, Uganda, this morning, where we hired a taxi for the 6-hour drive to Soroti. And oh, what a drive it was! It is so lush and green, with lots of bananas, papayas, and sugar cane all along the ride.

Emily and I are settled into our hotel room for the evening. We are excited to meet with Moses tomorrow morning and start the "in-person" planning for the beginning of medical camp on Thursday.

Thank you all for praying for our safety traveling. Everything has gone quite smoothly so far, and we are in good health. Please pray for a productive day Wednesday getting the meds sorted and that the final plans come together.

Are We There Yet?     30 October, 2023, 07:12 am
This is day 3 of our journey to Uganda, and we aren't there yet. But we are thankful. We had safe, uneventful flights from Boston to Doha and Doha to Nairobi, and all of our luggage arrived without any problems. We are now at Lifeway Center for the rest of the day and tonight. What a treat to see our friends here one extra time this year.

We met up with Lucas, who will be traveling with us tomorrow. After a short flight to Entebbe, Uganda, we will take a 6-hour taxi ride to Soroti. That will be our base for the 2-day medical camp, which begins on Thursday.

Uganda, November 2023     29 October, 2023, 04:25 pm
On November 2-3, 2023, we will be conducting a mini, exploratory medical camp in Soroti, Uganda. This is a new location for medical camps for EPI, and this trip is to help deermine if they are an effective tool for church planting there. Emily Wilkinson is joining me on this project, and she will be distributing reading glasses at the clinics. It is very exciting to try this in a new location. We will be in 2 villages outside of Soroti. Because of the locations, we will also be able to have open-air evangelism at the clinics.

At this time, Emily and I have arrived in Doha, and we will soon be leaving on our flight to Nairobi, where we will spend 1 night before heading to Uganda. There is a lot of travel involved this time for a short period of ministry. Please be praying that our time in Uganda is effective and fruitful, and that the Lord would show us if and how the medical camp could be used to plant future churches.

We appreciate your prayers for all the travel involved, supplies getting in to the country, and health, safety, and a good team connection with our partners in Uganda.
